Day 20: Forts, Accomplishments, Stories, &Neighbors' Brightening Days

SELF-CARE: Stop right now and think of three things you did well or accomplished yesterday. Got them? Sometimes we get so bogged down in the things that we didn't get accomplished (like I was distracted so many times that it literally took me all day to switch the laundry to the dryer!)  or the ways we failed in this moment or that one, that we forget what we are doing well. Try to remember these today when you here the "should haves" or negative self-talk creeping in. Bonus: Text your partner or a friend about a thing they are doing well right now as well!

PARENTING TIP: Tell your child stories of when you were their age. Even if they are younger, they'll appreciate it, and perhaps getting out some old photos could be in order! My eldest begs for stories each night of when I was his age. I think this has really brought us closer together, as I have become all the more relatable to him beyond the realm of adult/mother. What a great time to spend some more time in conversations with one another.

INDOOR ACTIVITY: Some of my favorite memories as a child were building forts. I felt like they were my own little world- all tucked in safe and secure. What better time to build this sense of security than now? Put sheets over furniture, the bigger the better. Put "furniture" inside your fort (tiny shelves, pillows, etc.). Make sure you get inside the world of the fort as well to join your child in the magic. And no greater sibling bonding activity has been found!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY: Choose a neighbor/fire station or local business owner to leave something for (on their doorstep). Have your children make a card, some artwork, or even add something that you know they'll like/use. It could be muffins, bath bombs, coffee, art supplies, etc. The ripple effect will be felt. Involve children in the brainstorming process so they feel they made something that would really bring joy to this person (or people).  During this time, focusing on values of gratitude, compassion, and service will certainly have a long lasting effect. "So shines a good deed in a weary world!" -Willy Wonka
