Day 16: Neighborhood Fun, Wish Jar, and Indulgence

SELF-CARE: Go find that fancy lotion or bath salt set you got for your birthday or whatever luxury item (even chocolate) you were saving and take a few moments to indulge. I still remember he one thing my mom never shared with us were her Mint Milano cookies. I look back on that now and realize what a great self-care move that was - just to have one little indulgence all to herself. So today, take a few moments to really allow yourself that little extra something. These are long days and a little self love can go a long way.

PARENTING TIP: Tell your child three things today you love about them. "I love how you always seem to make me smile." "I love how you help your father/mother/sister/brother," "I love waking up and being your parent!" You will be surprised at just how happy it makes them. Do this with your partner or a friend as well. Spread the love. We all need a little extra affirmation right now.

INDOOR ACTIVITY: Family Wish Jar - Make a jar so that everyone can write down wishes of things they want to do when the COVID-19 crisis is over. This is great for when your child says, "I wish we could go to the park" or "I wish I could see Josie." This is a tangible way for children's losses and grief during this time to be made concrete and to feel heard. While it may break your heart to hear these, try not to over-empathize during these moments. Keep in mind that they are learning resiliency, delay of gratification, sacrifice for the greater good, and other lessons that will stick with them for years to come.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY: What scavenger hunts are happening in your neighborhood? Check out your neighborhood list servs, Facebook groups, or Nextdoor apps to find out what people are doing. Many neighborhoods are placing rainbow or other artwork or bears for bear hunts in windows for children to find while out on walks. Find out or just look up to see if you can figure it, then go home and add to your own windows and spread the love. * Please note due to the encouragement to stay in your own neighborhoods, we are replacing nature locations with either tips for neighborhood walks or backyard/front porch engagement activities. Please keep exploring close by neighborhood nature spots if they are available to you!
